This antique locket was crafted sometime during the Edwardian design period (1900-1915). The case is 18K gold and features a cabochon cut sapphire in the center. The sapphire is synthetic. Synthetic gemstones were first introduced during the late Victorian period (1880’s). The earliest synthetic gemstones were often used as accent stones and in mechanical timepieces. Common technology today, synthetic gemstones were the culmination of thousands of years of alchemy and chemistry. The breakthrough of this technology cannot be understated. This 18K gold case opens to reveal a glass panel with black and white portrait of an Edwardian Era woman inside.
